Nowadays, it's not easy to take a 30 consecutive day holiday to do the entire 780 kilometres of the Way of St James from Orreaga/Roncesvalles to Santiago de Compostela. That's why it's becoming increasingly more common to divide the Way into stages.
Navarra is a "Land of Diversity" and the French Way of St James is a good example of this. Starting from the north in Orreaga/Roncesvalles right up to Viana, covering slightly more than 100 kilometres, you'll discover some completely contrasting scenery. You'll be charmed by the ever green mountains and villages of the Pyrenees, its monuments and legends dating back to medieval times. Later on, you'll be greeted by the ramparts and cathedral of Pamplona and, once you have crossed through the old quarters, the citadel will be your last stop as you leave the city behind.
You'll then come to the vineyards and extensive grain fields of central Navarra, where the Way becomes easier. There you can enjoy the Romanesque art of Puente la Reina, Estella-Lizarra and Torres del Río, just before reaching Viana, the last town of the Way in Navarra, before it enters La Rioja.
Access practical information on the stages of French Way and its Aragon branch, Ebro river Way and the Baztan valley Way.
