Bird-watching in Navarre

Towns and villages

In general

There are few large towns/cities in Navarre (Pamplona, Estella, Tudela), but there are a lot of villages of varying dimensions. In the large towns/cities, a more urban environment is combined with gardens, parks and suburbs which lend a somewhat wilder air. In the villages, particularly the smaller ones, nature blends in with the urban environment.

Many species of bird have adapted to life in villages and towns/cities, although generally they almost all need wilder environments such as parks, gardens or open land to complete their life cycles. Some breed or sleep in cities and seek food in the surrounding area. Others can find everything they need in this environment.

The greater the number of environments in a town or village, the greater the number of bird species which can inhabit it. A wider variety can be spotted when a river passes through a built-up area or when there are gardens with thicket.

Obviously, the species which appear in the different towns/villages also very according to their geographical location.

Some of the species present in Navarre?s towns and villages are the White Stork, Common Kestrel, Common Swift, Eurasian Collared Dove, Barn Swallow, House Martin, White Wagtail, Black Redstart, Robin, Blackbird, Great Tit, Eurasian Jackdaw, Spotless Starling, House Sparrow, European Serin, Greenfinch and Goldfinch.

Nocturnal species include the Barn Owl, Little Owl and Scops Owl.

It is also possible to see others such as the Red Kite, Black Kite, Song Thrush, Wren, etc...
