Bird-watching in Navarre

Aleppo-pine woods

In general

These are woods formed by the Aleppo Pine (Pinus halepensis).

EThese pine woods are only found in Navarre?s Ribera region, in the far south of the community. They used to cover large expanses, but only small copses and patches worthy of consideration in remote spots now remain. Those in the area of Rada-Mélida, Eguaras and La Negra in Bardenas feature among the most important of these.

Most of these are mature, well-structured, not particularly dense pine woods with Mediterranean thicket (Kermes oak, rosemary, etc.) of varying thickness.

The bird communities found in these pine woods is similar to that of other pines, although generally more abundant due to the fact that the majority of these woods are better preserved.

The characteristic species are the Sparrowhawk, Hobby, Common Woodpigeon, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Long-eared Owl, Red-necked Nightjar, Blackbird, Mistle Thrush, Goldcrest, Short-toed Treecreeper, Coal Tit, Great Tit, Blue Tit, Carrion Crow and Common Chaffinch.
