Castel-Ruiz Building

The old Jesuit monastery, built around the cloister that is now known as the Castel-Ruiz building, is the scene of interesting cultural events that take part in Tudela throughout the year. It was the seat of the first School of Grammar in the city, and its Mannerist architecture from the 17th century forms a unit together with the Church of San Jorge (St George).
The outstanding feature is its sober courtyard, formerly the cloister, built in brick with rounded arches on three floors. The ground floor is open and the upper two are closed in. Other interesting features are the staircase - with a vault over it - that gives access to the first floor, the exhibition room on the ground floor (possibly an oratory dedicated to the Virgin Mary, with a vault decorated with magnificent plaster-work), and the bodegas (cellars) of the old monastery, re-used for cultural events.
