Efigie de San Miguel
The word 'romería' (popular pilgrimage) comes from the pilgrims who travelled to Rome and covers the journeys made to venerate saints and deities. However, in Navarre there is a curios tradition in which the Saint makes the pilgrimage to a number of localities, churches and entities. This involves the effigy of San Miguel de Aralar, the travelling archangel.

Throughout the year, and particularly in spring, this gilded image leaves its usual home, the Sanctuary of San Miguel in Excelsis on the Aralar mountain range and visits thousands of the faithful, who await his arrival with fervour. According to popular belief, this custom arose because it was impossible for ill believers to go up to the Sanctuary on the mountain.

The visits of San Miguel are regular, but a particularly interesting one is the second to Pamplona on the Monday after Easter. The most moving moment is the meeting and greeting between San Miguel and the angel of the Santa Casa de Misericordia. Another key moment on his journeys is the blessing of the fields. The figure of San Miguel turns to each of the cardinal point, and verses from the four evangelists are recited.
