During the festivities of the 'Virgen de las Angustias' around the third Sunday in September the southern town of Lodosa is the scene of one of the most curious events in Navarre: 'el toro ensogado'. The tradition goes back to the 19th century, when the people of the town brought in a 'torico" (small bull) from the countryside to honour their patron saint.

Once in the morning and once in the evening a big bull runs through the streets of the town trying to free itself from the rope placed around its horns. The youngsters of Lodosa handle the bull skilfully, stopping it goring people it encounters along the way.

The square next to the town hall is where the 'race' starts. There is no set route, nor are there wooden protective barriers in the streets. The skill of the young men and the way they run in front of the bull are very spectacular; the whole thing lasts about an hour.

Lodosa is also home to the 'Día del Piquillo', an event to extol the virtues of the "red gold" of the town. We are talking about the red pepper of Lodosa, which is exquisite both fresh and canned. The product is supported by a Designation of Origin and is one of the stars of Navarrese cuisine. Yet another good reason to visit Lodosa at any time of the year.
