After the inaugural rocket - on the day also known as Giants' Friday - and throughout the week Estella-Lizarra turns into the epicentre of Navarre's festivities. The streets fill with fun in the form of the running of steers, the Bajadica del Puy, the Pañuelada or the Abadejada,
 
The Bajadica del Puy takes place on Giants' Friday in the afternoon, when the young men of the town dance down to the town from the basilica of El Puy to the sound of music. On the Saturday the women repeat the bajadica along the same route. The Pañuelada, held on the Sunday after the procession, is worth seeing for its colour and spectacle. The people of Estella accompany the municipal brass band to the Town Hall, waving their red neck scarves as they dance along. The Abadejada, which marks the 'start of the end' of the festivities, takes place on the Thursday morning when the cocinillas (wannabe chefs) of the town compete to cook the best bacalao al ajoarriero (cod in an oil, garlic and red pepper sauce).
 
Bullfights and, of course, music, have a strong presence every day. You can enjoy the pipes or flageolets that accompany the Cortege of ceremonial giants and big-heads, or the dantzaris who interpret the Baile de la Era every day. This popular traditional dance brings lots of people together every night in the Plaza de los Fueros at 1.a.m. Why not give it a try?
