The southernmost town in Navarre,
Cortes, organises an open-air Nativity every Christmas. The Virgin Mary, Joseph, the Baby Jesus, Roman guards, the Three Wise Men, shepherds, washerwomen, blacksmiths and a variety of other characters come to life to take visitors back 2000 years in time and feel that they are at the heart of the legendary Nativity of Judea.
Animated courtiers represent scenes from the daily life of the time in an excellent setting: the
gardens of the castle of Cortes. The gardens cover 25,000 square metres and contain everything imaginable: a street market, a mill, a settlement, a foundry, a rustic bakery, a carpenter's shop, a "lepers' hill", pottery stalls, Pontius Pilate's temple, a gladiators' circus, Herod's castle, a tavern and tastings of sweets, chesnuts, migas (shepherds' breadcrumbs), chocolate, tapas and wine.
