Every Maundy Thursday at 17:30 the
church of San Agustín is the scene of the renewal of the 'Voto de las Cinco Llagas' (literal translation: vow of the five wounds). The ceremony goes back to 1599 when the city pleaded for divine intervention to be freed of the plague, which devastated entire cities at the time. After passing through the streets of Pamplona in procession with the symbol of the five wounds of Christ and the crown of thorns, the plague fortunately disappeared.
As a mark of gratitude the vow is renewed in a solemn ceremony in which the local councillors, dressed formally and showing the back of the city medal that contains the emblem of the wounds of Christ, parade through the streets under the black flag of the city. The route runs from the City Hall to the church of San Agustín. Inside the church, the Cathedral Chapel Choir interprets pieces such as
"Miserere Romano", composed in the 17th century.
