This little town, which is the valley's capital, lies in the Pyrenean
valley of Salazar, just a few kilometres from Ochagavía, surrounded by pasture lands and drained by the Salazar trout stream. It still retains all the charm of a mountain village with its hamlet centred under the attentive gaze of the 16th century parish
church of San Román, on which its narrow, cobbled streets converge.
There are numerous
traditional houses of two and three stories built from stone and wood and topped with flat red tiles. One of the most notable of the coats-of-arms sported by these houses is the valley's own shield, which represents a wolf with a lamb in its mouth and reminds us of the livestock-raising tradition of the valley as well as the need to defend the animals from wolf attacks.
