The Bidasoa railway line started in 1898 to link Irun to the mines at Endarlatsa in Navarra. The now-disused route has been converted into a greenway covering 35 kilometres from Oieregi to Endarlatsa along the Bidasoa river valley. Along the way you will see magnificent scenery with green meadows dotted with farmhouses, picturesque tunnels, typical villages and even the odd abandoned bunker. On foot or by bicycle, it is always an easy and pleasant trip that is mostly flat.

Known as the Txikito (little) train due to the gauge (0.92 m), it made its last journey to the area where the British set up their mine in the 1850s. It is now a long trail for walkers/cyclists that runs along the river Bidasoa.

The route commences in Oieregi, and the first part goes to the beautiful town square of Legasa, surrounded by huge traditional houses.

The route starts in the pretty square at Legasa, surrounded by enormous stone houses. It then links up with the river Bidasoa through thick woods as far as Doneztebe-Santesteban. This section is often used by motor vehicles and livestock, so one needs to take extra care here. Before reaching Sunbilla the route goes through 3 tunnels surrounded by leafy woods.

Heading for Bera, and parallel to the N-121-A road, you pass the old railways stations of Igantzi and Lesaka, although nothing is left of them. A bunker from the Spanish Civil War is preserved here. In Bera its beautiful old part is the highlight, from where the route narrows between the river and the steep slopes of the pre-Pyrenees as far as Endarlatsa.

Did you know that...?

This section of the green route forms part of the "Ederbidea" project and of section number 1 of the Eurovelo, "Atlantic Coast Route", that starts in the North Cape of Norway and ends in southern Portugal.
