Bird-watching in Navarre

Irrigated land and Market gardens

In general

These are agricultural areas often located in riverside meadows with a wide variety of crops, from trees (fruit trees) to vegetables. These habitats are much more frequent and extensive in the south of Navarre and, above all, in the Ribera region, on the banks of the River Ebro and other large rivers such as the Arga or Aragón.

Over recent years, large areas of land given over to dry-land crops have been reconverted into irrigated land, a hostile environment for most bird species. Traditional market gardens, smaller in size, punctuated with hedgerows, slopes and trees are far more suited to bird life and provide the chance to spot a good number of species.

Many of the birds present in these areas come from neighbouring towns and villages for food.

The characteristic species include the Black Kite, Red Kite, Common Buzzard, Common Kestrel, Common Cuckoo, Hoopoe, Wryneck, European Turtle Dove, White Wagtail, Crested Lark, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Zitting Cisticola, Great Tit, Carrion Crow, Magpie, Spotless Starling, House Sparrow, Tree Sparrow, Goldfinch, European Serin, Greenfinch, Cirl Bunting and Corn Bunting.
