Which places are good for birdwatching in Navarre There are so many and they are so diverse that we suggest you visit our 'Recommended Sites' section where you will find information about 12 selected sites to go birdwatching in Navarre. In this section there is information on how to go there, the existing habitats, recommended birdspots, species that you can see there and recommended seasons to visit them.
What are the best times of the year to observe birdlife in Navarre?
The best times for observing birds in Navarre vary depending on what species you want to see. Observation can be very satisfactory throughout the year and there are several species, families or phenomena that are worthy of note. If you want to observe the highest number of species or the greatest variety, the best season is undoubtedly the spring. From March to June you can see migratory birds that arrive from the south or are passing through, while reproducing species start breeding and are very active. For large-scale migrations, the post-nuptial period is best i.e. from mid-summer to the end of the autumn. The best times depend on the species: most birds of prey and storks pass through in August and September and geese, cranes and doves in October and November, to mention just some. The habitat you wish to visit may also change through the year. Generally, winter and spring are the best times for wetlands, spring and summer for mountain areas, and winter, spring and autumn for certain woodlands, spring for grasslands, etc.If you are looking for a particular group of birds we can give you some general advice, such as ducks at the end of the winter and in early spring, woodpeckers from March to May, grassland birds in spring, etc.
When and where can the Great Bittern be observed?
The Great Bittern is present in the wetlands in southern Navarre, both as a reproducing and a wintering bird. The Lake at Pitillas is probably one of the best places to observe it throughout the year. Nevertheless, changes in the water level and other facts may affect the presence and number of this species. In unfavourable years it is particularly hard to spot.Given that it is a threatened and sensitive species, we recommend that you consult first with the personnel at the Observatory of the Lake at Pitillas to know the best way to observe the bird without disturbing it.
Where can the Lammergeier be observed?
The Lammergeier is present in the Navarrese Pyrenees and other mountainous areas of the northern part of the region. It is difficult to specify a particular spot for observation because there are few of them present, and these cover a large territory and are very mobile. Generally, we could say that in the mountainous areas – particularly in the Pyrenees and its foothills – it is a good idea to watch the sky very carefully because they can appear anywhere at any time. Any period of the year is good.
Where can the White-backed Woodpecker be seen?
This bird usually lives in mature beech o beech-spruce forests. The Pyrenean woodlands are where this species is found in Navarre. Among the places recommended by Birding Navarra are the Belagua valley, Bértiz (more difficult here) or the Irati valley. The best time for observation is the end of the winter-early spring (March to May), when they are very active marking out territory, and before leaves sprout. They are also present throughout the year in other places, being a sedentary bird.
Are there any specialised guides for bird watching in Navarre? If so, where can they be hired?
Yes, there are several companies with local guides specialised in bird watching and Nature who are familiar with the territory of the region. You can find them in the section "Accommodation, agencies and guides" of this website.
