The pyrenees: forests, mountains and valleys

The gentlest part of the Pyrenees is located in the north of Navarre. The mountain range drops gently down from east to west, the crests are more rounded, the climate becomes more Atlantic, slate roofs give way to tiles and the forests change from spruce to oak and beech. The landscape subtly transforms itself.

To the east, the Pyrenees provides some majestic scenery: the imposing escarpments of the massif of Larra, the great extension of the beech and spruce forest of the Selva de Irati, the depth of the Arbayún gorge, overflown by vultures, or the historical site of the Collegiate Church of Roncesvalles. The landscape gets gentler as it drops down to the Baztan and Ultzama valleys and the Bidasoa valley. Pretty farmhouses, legendary caves, hidden reservoirs, green meadows and oak and beech woods are a delight for the camera lens.

To the west, the Aralar range or the Urbasa-Andía Natural Park provide some fantastic shots, and magnificent views of the bluish peaks of the eastern Pyrenees.
