There is a place in Navarre where it is very easy to step back into the Roman Empire. The Archaeological Museum of Andelos is an open door to get to know the approach to town planning, way of life and beliefs of the ancient Roman city of Andelos.

After a visit to the museum, visit the ruins themselves. You can feel like a citizen of the great empire, recreating those great houses in your imagination, enjoying the thermal baths or admiring the city's complex water supply system.

The Archaeological Museum of Andelos is located near Mendigorría, half-way between Pamplona, Estella-Lizarra and Tafalla in the Central Zone of Navarre. The museum stands to the west of the excavations of the Roman Villa, next to the access road to the site. Inaugurated in 2003, its purpose is to illustrate what life was like in this city, whose epoch of splendour was in the 1st and 2nd centuries A.D.

The building is designed around a central gallery oriented from east to west, similar to the direction followed by the decumani, the perpendicular axes of the Roman city. It has two different wings: the area of archaeological services, dedicated to field work, which includes a laboratory, workshop and storeroom, and the museum itself, with a reception area, exhibition space and an audiovisual room. Its peculiar construction earned an honorary mention in the VI Premio de Arquitectura de Ladrillo (Brick Architecture Prize) 1999/2001.

What is there to see in the Archaeological Museum of Andelos?
Eight panels explain the different aspects of life in the Roman city, such as urban planning, communications, the water supply system, the public baths and the ways of life and beliefs of the inhabitants.

It has also has a large display case containing items recovered in the excavation, together with reproductions and scenes in back-lit panels. The general theme of the display is life in the city, explained in a number of monographic sections: the origin of the town, first contacts with Roman civilisation, architecture, ways of life in the form of occupations and handicrafts, dress, leisure, or household articles. This display case is accompanied by a recreation of the figure of the god Pan, also used in the logo of the archaeological site.

The exhibition area of the Archaeological Museum of Andelos is completed with a large eight-square-meter model in which the city and the surrounding area are represented to scale, from the dam as far as the river Arga. Inside the model you can see the Roman villa, the town of Mendigorría, the hermitage, water, and the museum.
