On February 3rd, during the Second Carlist War
, a major offensive by the Carlist army against the Liberal troops
took place in the locality of Lácar. It ended with the victory of the Carlist forces.
It was a surprise attack, carried out while the Liberal troops were having lunch in the village square.
More than 1,000 soldiers on both sides died in the battle. Alfonso XII
, still very young, had to leave the battleground very quickly as he was on the point of being captured by the Carlist troops.
Lácar commemorates the battle on June 25th
, with a number of events including a guided tour to the battle sites and a theatrical re-enactment of it. The commemoration has been declared a Festivity of Regional Tourist Interest in Navarre.
