Tudela Museum - Decanal Palace

Museums / Artistic

There are numerous reasons that might take you to Tudela, whether to lose yourself in its hidden corners replete with art and history, or sample some of its outstanding cuisine, or even take part in one of its many traditions.

A walk through the historical quarter of the city will take you to the Palacio Decanal, whose origins date back to the 15th century. This is a lovely brick construction with an irregular layout adjacent to the Cathedral's magnificent Romanesque cloister, with which it forms the Museum of Tudela.

In its rooms you can admire works of sacred art from the various churches in the city such as Renaissance altarpieces, religious imaginary from various eras and delicate pieces of gold and silverwork. A highlight among the Baroque canvases are those by painter Vicente Berdusán, regarded as the finest Baroque artist in Navarre of the 17th century, and notable oil-on-board works include The Final Judgement, attributed to 'El Bosco' and the Gothic panel of St. Lucas.

The chapel of San Dionís, features sacred Jewish ornaments and books. In the medieval cellar of the Palace you can see the remains of domestic Islamic implements and, in the Cathedral's cloister, the archaeological remains of the former Tudela mosque.
