New Year's Eve

Pilgrim's Way to Santiago
Fiestas, traditions and events of interest / Carnival, Christmas ceremony

The clock strikes 12 o'clock. It is midnight, and these are the last peals of the bells of the outgoing year. Popular tradition has established several rituals to start the new year on the right foot. Very people miss the ritual, most of them wearing red underwear. They eat twelve grapes and toast with champagne and a gold ring inside the glass.

There are other curious rites held on New Year's Eve, however. In Italy, for example, people eat lentils, and in Ecuador they burn an effigy that represents all the evil of the outgoing year, and even read his will!. Without travelling so far, however, in Pamplona the New Year is received by people in fancy dress. This fashion of anticipating the Carnival in the capital of Navarre is a recent but very popular one. Animals, pieces of fruit, fairies, goblins, princes, vampires or contemporary celebrities take to the streets and create an incredible festive atmosphere. Why not join them? The only requirement is to have a good time and celebrate the start of the new year.
