Carnival in Lesaka

Fiestas, traditions and events of interest / Carnival

The zaku-zaharrak are characters stuffed into sacks full of straw with their faces covered by handkerchiefs. They have fat bellies with which they hit people (jokingly) in the village streets at sunset. When they get tired, they sit down on top of each other to rest.

The most characteristic feature of the mairuak are their hats, from which coloured strips hang.

The goitarrak, dressed in red and white with a beret and bells, play castanets.
