For more than 20 years, the Descent of the Witch has replaced the traditional chupinazo to start the festivals in the Roncal valley town of Vidángoz; these are held at the end of August in honour of St. Augustine. This initiative was started off by a Catalan who used to holiday here, Ignacio Doñate, who saw in the town's witchcraft tradition an opportunity to give a magical touch to the inauguration of festivities.

At midnight, the silence and darkness give Vidángoz a mysterious atmosphere. At the 'Pitxorronga' club a huge bonfire is lit, where the young people of the town, dressed in witches' costumes, light their torches, after which the witch Maruxa descends on her broom from a cable.

Back in the village, the youngsters dance as if possessed around the fire, in representation of an akelarre (witches' coven), and after reading the proclamation of the festivities and welcoming the Maruxa, they accompany her on a lively street parade to definitively launch the festival.

After five days of festive fervour, they are brought to an end with the traditional Ascent of the Witch.
