In a bucolic setting where nature blends harmoniously with history and legend, stands the beautiful monumental complex of Orreaga/Roncesvalles
, where you can also find the museum of sacred art of the Royal Collegiate of Santa María.
The exhibition features a sizeable collection of carvings, canvases, an ancient hand-written and printed book and various pieces of gold and silverwork which include a Romanesque silver Book of Gospels, a Gothic-Mudéjar reliquary box in gilded silver from the 13th century and the reliquary known as Charlemagne's Chess-set
from the middle of the 14th century. You can also see other gems such as the emerald known as the Miramamolín
, a trophy won by King Sancho VIII 'the Strong' at the battle of Navas de Tolosa in 1212, which today forms part of the coat of arms of Navarre. And in the painting section, outstanding examples include the Triptych of the Calvary, from the El Bosco school, and the Holy Family of San Juanito by Luis de Morales.
