The Wine Museum in Olite is located in the former Palace of Santo Ángel, a 17th century building that stands on the Plaza de Teobaldos, like the neighbouring Royal Palace of Olite, today a National Parador
This innovative exhibition centre comprises three floors linked by an interior atrium which features a collection of paintings with wine as their common subject matter. Each floor is dedicated to a particular aspect of wine
, so on the ground floor the visit starts with a journey through the historical evolution
of wine in Navarre, its global context, and its myths and rituals. After this room, a corridor takes you to the stairs to access the other sections, one side of which displays wine bottles from the Navarra Designation of Origin. The first floor
is dedicated to the vine
, with an educational and interactive journey showing the tools that grape-growers use which helps us to appreciate what they do. The last floor
focuses on the winemaking process
, using models with explanatory panels. On each floor different videos are shown on wine-related aspects which envelop visitors in the vibrant sounds of the txalaparta and other instruments used in the music of Kepa Junkera, which resounds throughout the museum.
The tour ends in the "wine and the senses" room
in the basement
where the wine cellar of the palace used to be. By using aroma boxes and sweets you can learn something of the theory behind the wine tasting process.
